Day 1: Palmerston North to Tongariro National Park

  • Drive time: Approximately 3 hours
  • Highlights:
    • Depart Palmerston North in the morning and head towards Tongariro National Park.
    • Spend the day driving and arriving at Tongariro National Park.
    • Explore one of the shorter walks such as Tawhai Falls (Gollum’s Pool) or a 2 hour loop to Taranaki Falls.
    • Overnight stay at the DOC campground or holiday park in Tongariro National Park.

Day 2: Tongariro National Park

  • Highlights:
    • Spend the day exploring Tongariro National Park.
    • Hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing or other trails.
    • Enjoy the volcanic landscapes and stunning views.
    • Overnight stay at the DOC campground or holiday park in Tongariro National Park.

Day 3: Tongariro National Park to Taupō

  • Drive time: Approximately 1.5 hours
  • Highlights:
    • Depart Tongariro National Park in the morning and drive to Taupō.
    • Arrive in Taupō and explore the town.
    • Visit Huka Falls, find the warm spots around the lake and take part in water activities on Lake Taupō.
    • Camp overnight at Reids Farm, the free campground near Huka Falls, or head into town for one of the holiday parks.

Day 4: Taupō

  • Highlights:
    • Spend the day exploring Taupō and its surroundings.
    • Relax in the natural hot springs or indulge in spa treatments.
    • Explore nearby attractions like Craters of the Moon or Aratiatia Rapids.
    • Camp overnight at Reids Farm, the free campground near Huka Falls, or head into town for one of the holiday parks.

Day 5: Taupō to Rotorua

    • Drive to Rotorua in the morning.

    • Optionally, make stops at points of interest along the way.
      Tongariro National Trout Centre: Learn about New Zealand’s trout and freshwater ecosystems at this informative center. You can also try your hand at trout fishing in the nearby Tongariro River.
      Taihape: Check out the giant gumboot sculpture in town, try your hand at throwing one in their designated gumboot throwing lane or visit their museum.
      Mangaweka: Just a short drive from Taihape, Mangaweka is known for its scenic beauty and the iconic Rangitikei River. Stop by for picturesque views and perhaps a riverside picnic.
    • Arrive back in Palmerston North by late afternoon or evening to conclude your road trip.

  • Drive time: Approximately 1 hours to Greytown, then 10 minutes to Carterton
  • Highlights:
    • Depart Ngawi and drive to Greytown.

    • Visit Schoc Chocolates for some sweet treats.
    • After exploring Greytown, continue your journey to Carterton.

Day 5: Carterton to Masterton

Day 6: Masterton to Castlepoint
